Enter the Dutch industrial playground you have to see to believe, with an interactive exhibit, bus & boat tours to explore the newest man-made island.

  • Rotterdam’s port feels like you’ve landed on a new planet: one filled with giant, metal, industrial equipment. It may come off as cold and desolate, but there’s so much more to this man-made area. Maasvlakte 2 is an ongoing reclamation project to expand Europe’s biggest port. Witness the world’s most modern container terminals, giant wind turbines, and power plants all along the newly made shoreline.
  • The best place to learn about this wild area is FutureLand, the information center. It may not sound exhilarating at first, but its interactive exhibition fills you in on all the intriguing deets about the Maas. The crew is happy to answer any questions you have, provide you with helpful maps to get around the whole area, and even point out some of the best stop off points for food and beach views! (Heads up, one part of the beach is a nude beach!)
  • If you’re wanting something a bit more adventurous, hop on one of the bus or boat tours that depart from FutureLand! They each last about an hour and a half and take you all throughout the port, getting up close and personal to the massive industrial machinery. Port for the Kids: Get the little ones involved in FutureLand’s workshops, technical tests, or even fossil expeditions on the beach! Let’s teach innovation from a young age!

Driving through the Rotterdam port made me feel like I was in Jurassic Park -- except instead of a Stegosaurus or T-Rex, it was hundreds of massive steel cranes, shipping containers, and metal machinery. I’ve truly never seen anything like it. I had no idea what to expect, but stopping at FutureLand was super informative and interesting! Definitely one of my Rotterdam highlights.
