Outside of the city you will find a forest park.

Very different from the beautiful city parks in Utrecht is Máxima Park. Being here makes you feel as if you are very far away from the city, meanwhile it is still within reach. With 300 hectares the park was opened by Queen Máxima in 2013 and brings the residents around the park together.

  • Máxima Park consists of four area’s, among which the Binnenhof and the Parkpergola.
  • The Binnenhof is the centre of the park and is only accessible through the surrounding Park Pergola. It is 50 hectares big and contains woods, fields, meandering watercourse, ponds, pedestrian areas, a playground and bridges.
  • The other two areas of the park, The Ribbon (het Lint) and The Viking Rhine (de Viking Rijn) contain a 8 kilometres long cycle track and have water that allows activities such as swimming, ice skating and sailing.

Besides being perfect for hikes, cycling, swimming and other outdoor activities, the park also has a teahouse and lunchroom, named The ParkPavilion which was inspired by a never-released design by Pierre Cuypers (the same architect who designed the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station). Outside the restaurant there is a playground, a sculpture park and a butterfly garden. Check the website for events that take place (such as theatre shows and chess games in the Japanese Garden).
