A stunning example of Gothic architecture in Zeeland’s capital, Middelburg.
In the centre of historic Middelburg is one of the best-preserved Gothic buildings in the Netherlands. Construction began in 1452 and wasn’t completed until 1520, almost 70 years later! The impressive Gothic facade features red and white shutters, turrets, and 25 statues of Zeeland’s noblemen and women.
The town hall was severely damaged during WWII after the German bombardment. In 1940 the interiors were completely destroyed by fire, sadly old paintings and documents were lost. But, after the war, the inside was reconstructed and the Gothic facade restored, so we can appreciate the building today.
Art at Vleeshal
If you pop inside the town hall you’ll find a small contemporary art centre. Modern art lovers might want to make a quick stop here to see one of Vleeshal’s changing exhibits. Get a taste of what the town hall looks like inside.
Not your thing? No worries, stick to admiring the building from the outside. Even for the most artsy people, a look around the art centre won’t take long.
