This eyecatcher has been watching over the canals since since the late 15th century.

The Munttoren (Coin Tower) is located on Muntplein (Coin Square), and is a busy place as it connects the shopping street the Kalverstraat with the Flower Market. The tower was built between 1480 and 1487, as part of the medieval city wall. It was once part of a gate that had a tower on each side, called the Regulierspoort. Later, in the 17th century, the tower was used to make coins and that is where it has got its name from.

In 1618 the gate caught fire and only the tower was rebuilt in Amsterdam Renaissance style a couple of years later. The tower has a carillon with 38 bells which you can hear every 15 minutes. Under the tower you will find a store where they sell Delftware.
