Venture back into the Dutch Golden Age in a canal house to find a museum and a hidden church!

  • What was a devoted Catholic’s solution to the banning of mass? Back in 1663, Dutch local Jan Hartmann’s answer was to build a secret church inside his attic! From the outside, it looks like any other classic Dutch home. But it’s what’s on the inside that’s truly incredible.
  • Did you know? This museum is the second oldest in the city, dating all the way back to 1888! Explore the remains of the 400 year old corridors in the house, now converted into a museum. You’ll find collections of silver, religious artifacts, and paintings in the various rooms. There’s also old school dutch furniture and two kitchens with Delft tile styles. Once you’ve really gotten a feel for the Dutch housing of the past, head up the spiral staircase hidden through a fake door in the living room to find the exquisite hidden church.
  • Our lord in the Attic, or Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, is a miniature version of a classic Catholic church - its decadent styling with marble walls and pillars make it a spectacular sight to see. Even though it’s only in an attic, the tiny but impressive church space can fit 150 people! Believe it or not, the church can still be used for its original purpose today, and aside from visiting the fascinating room you can also attend regular church services. Group visits and guided tours can be arranged in addition to a traditional museum visit by emailing. The tours can be provided in Dutch, English, French, and German, and they often have special tours and scavenger hunts for kids!
