Make sure to catch a view of this stunning building that acts as the seat of the International Court of Justice.

The Peace Palace is a gorgeous building that is literally a powerhouse: It houses the United Nations International Court of Justice, which is the principal judicial body of the United Nation, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Built in 1913, it was majority funded by the steel king Andrew Carnegie, and was created to house the court that would end wars. Court cases are still held there so you're unable to enter the building or the surrounding gardens most days. Not to worry though, this is definitely still worth the visit to see it from the outside!

  • Stop by the Peace Flame (also called eternal flame) just outside the estate, the flame symbolizes a commitment to maintaining peace among all the members of the United Nations.
  • Guided tours are available certain weekends/days, tickets become available a few weeks ahead of time on the website, so check the website frequently before you plan to visit.
  • During court cases, the Peace Palace is normally not open to the general public. However, if you'd really like to see the inner workings, you can arrive early on days with court cases for the International Court of Justice to be an audience member. Note that there is no guarantee you will be accepted of the audience.
