Travel to the village of Wiuwert in Friesland to uncover the mysterious four preserved mummies of Hervormde Kerk.
Over 300 years ago, carpenters were working at the local church Hervormde Kerk in the village of Wiuwert. Little did they know it wasn’t going to be a normal working day. The carpenters stumbled across a crypt, in which they discovered 11 coffins that looked completely new… Four of the preserved mummies of the Hervormde Kerk still remain in the church today.
Known as Mummiekelder Wiuwert to the locals, you can see the preserved mummies yourself by descending into the church’s cellar. Guided tours are available from April till the end of October in Dutch.
The mystery behind these preserved mummies remains unsolved nor do we know who the people were. While the mummies are the highlight of the church, you might want to take a quick look around the church’s graveyard which is said to be haunted.
