Hello pros and aspiring photographers! When you’re planning a trip to Houten, prepare your lenses for a colour packed shot by the lake of Rietplas in Houten. These unique Rainbow Houses are a great lesser-known photo spot.

By Lake Rietplas, this whole place is one of the prettiest residential areas in the Utrecht province. Even if you’re not super into photography, it’s worth dropping by to see these houses and the pretty lake. Unknown to most travellers making their way to the Netherlands, Houten’s Rainbow Houses are a hidden gem worth visiting.

• Most photos of the Rainbow Houses of Houten are taken at Golden Hour, but it can be difficult to get the best shot possible. Keep an eye on the weather. While photos of the houses from a distance across the lake look stunning, you can get up close too!
• Some of the best angles of the Rainbow Houses can be found on the bridges on Rendiermos and Beusichemsetuin. The bridges are cyclist friendly.
• The Rainbow Houses are hardly a tourist spot! Most who come here are other photographers. Not included in travel guides, you’re looking at a hidden gem of Houten.
• If you’re coming to Houten in the summer, it’s worth starting at Rietplas Beach before going to the Rainbow Houses for some sunshine shots of the lake. You can see the Rainbow Houses from a distance here too. From the park and beach up here, you can find the Beusichemsetuin bridge to trek on to the houses.
