What once was a private residence, is now a museum where Rietveld’s work is honored.

Not too far from Wilhelminapark, in a quiet neighbourhood, there is a white house that will immediately catch your eye as it stands out from the rest of the houses, with a modern and minimalist design.

This house was designed in 1924, by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld (who you might know from the famous Red and Blue Chair). Truus Schröder asked him to, as they had worked together in the past, and she knew exactly what she wanted: a house designed in a way that would represent a home to her, a space that felt simple and free. Rietveld and Schröder were a perfect match, Schröder played an important role in the design process and for Rietveld this project was a dream come true. The then recently widowed mother of three lived in this house until she passed away in 1985.

After Schröder’s passing, the residence became a place where visitors can honour Rietveld’s work. Rietveld loved to use clean lines and the primary colours are typical for his style. The way he designed the house was spacious, simple and functional. An example of this is the sliding walls on the first floor, that by day could be used as an open space, and by night separated into different rooms.

For architecture lovers, it is definitely worth visiting the Rietveld Schröder House, which is even an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
