This station really is an eye-catcher.
The first train station of Rotterdam was opened in 1957. In 2014 the station we know today was officially opened by King Willem Alexander. It has a very interesting shape on the oustide and Rotterdammers like to call it the Haaienbek (Shark Mouth) or Station Kapsalon (referring to a popular fast food dish created in Rotterdam).
On a daily basis 170.000 travelers use the station and the roof is partly covered with solar panels.
Inside the station there are about 25 shops. A number of historical elements of the old station building have been preserved, such as the original clock on the facade, the letters Centraal Station (now LED lighting) and the speculaasjes (Dutch cookies), two granite sculptures on the platform 1.
