THE iconic monument of Zwolle. Sassenpoort is a beautiful gatehouse from the 15th century and is one of the ‘Top 100 Heritage Dutch’ heritage sites.

  • Known for its beautiful architecture and cultural history, Sassenpoort is worth a look while you’re wandering around the centre of Zwolle. Most come here to snap up a photo of Sassenpoort itself, but you can actually go up the steps when it's open for a view of Zwolle.
  • It might be a gatehouse, but only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed under Sassenpoort. The gate house of Zwolle was first built in 1409! Cars aren’t allowed below it as the gas would damage the bricks.
  • As well as the gatehouse itself, it’s worth walking just a little ways to the bridge on Wilhelminasingel for a nice view of the gatehouse and river. There’s also a charming fountain called Van Nahuys Fontein at 8025 BK Zwolle. The fountain is a good photo spot for any budding photographer to get a shot of the tower.
