See the wonders of the universe from a telescope inside the museum and 19th century observatory of Sonnenborgh.

  • A small, but interactive museum on astronomy. See the stars from their telescope! Close to the centre of Utrecht and the canal, the observatory is a unique museum to visit. Sonnenborgh Observatory is a fully still working observatory from the 19th century atop a 16th century city wall. Yup, this is one unique observatory!
  • While you’re here, you’ll see exhibits on the planets, stars, and the weather. It’ll take you around an hour to see everything. The exhibits are interesting but short. It’s best to come during one of the Star Viewing Nights in the autumn/winter, where you’ll get a tour and see the stars (only in Dutch). Otherwise visit on a Sunday for the best view of the sun through their massive solar telescopes.
  • Guided tour! For star gazers, you can book a tour in Dutch or English for a private and close look into the observatory. We don’t recommend it for everyone as there’s plenty more to see in Utrecht, but if this is your kind of thing then go for it!
