Live like the locals! Take a stroll down the narrow 9 streets and to find cafes, boutiques, and restaurants by Amsterdam’s canals.
If you’re looking for a central spot in Amsterdam, the 9 Streets is IT. What place could possibly be more picturesque than right smack in the middle of the canal belt? It’s a Unesco’s World Heritage spot, after all! Welcome to Amsterdam’s most well known and loved neighborhood. Probably the most shopped as well.
Like the late and great Vondel once said, “The world was built around Amsterdam.” If that’s true, then the 9 Streets must be the place Amsterdam was built around. The hub of all hubs! During the last century entrepreneurs began putting up shop here, realizing the best place for business is right in the center.
For over 400 years, the 9 streets have thrived as a local hub of shops, cafes, and restaurants. There are just as many locals hanging around as there are tourists, so clearly this place has high praise. But don’t just take our word for it--head down the cobbled streets and float in and out of the bustling shops to see for yourself.
Did you know? The street names on the 9 Streets are based on different types of animals, originally from the old skin tanning industry that was placed here: Huiden-, ree-, beren-, and Wolvenstraat stand for Skin, Deer, Bears, and Wolvesstreet. We guess that’s what it means to be a shopping animal!
