Yep, The Hague also has canals! Neighborhood initiatives have revived the 17th century waterways making them a cozy trip on the water with quaint cafes and shops along the way.

  • Unlike other Dutch cities, The Hague never relied on trade through the city's central canal system. Due to, ahem, hygiene issues, the canals were drained and closed between 1910 and 1970 to prevent the spread of bacterial diseases.
  • Luckily for us, a recent initiative by the local community and the progressive urban solution architecture firm (MVRDV) has restored the area. It's now back to its quaint and quintessential self. Walk or bike through this neighborhood, stop off at a cute café or local shop and discover its charms.
  • Go the classic route! Take a boat tour with The Hague Boat, and coast down the canals like a true Dutch local - when the weather permits, of course. These aren’t just any old boat tours. Va Try a breakfast boat trip, a city centre cruise, architecture tour or beer tasting tour. If you’d like to go at your own pace, you can even rent your own private boat! There are more than enough options to "get your feet wet" in The Hauge’s canals.
