**Discover this hidden garden in the middle of the city centre of Utrecht. **
The Pandhof is the monastery garden of the Dom Church and is full of flowers and herbs. Without knowing where this garden is, you can easily walk by without even noticing it. That would be a shame, so make sure to stop by when you are visiting the historical city centre of Utrecht!
The Pandhof dates back to the late 14th century. It connected the Dom Church to the Groot Kapittelhuis, but was also a cemetery and a place for religious contemplation. For a long time it was unclear who owned the garden, and residents used it for their own purposes, such as planting nut trees, storage, drinking beer and keeping chickens.
When in 1634 the Protestant ‘Illustrious School’ was founded, students would walk through it to get to their lecture rooms. At this point, the nut trees got removed, the residents weren’t able to use it anymore and it became a property of the University of Utrecht.
