A unique connection of nature, science, and society comes together to create a beautiful nature reserve and beach area in The Hague.

  • Known as “De Zandmotor” in Dutch, it started in 2011 as an experiment to naturally sustain Holland’s coastline. 21.5 million meters of sand make up this man-made peninsula. Now that makes for a big sand castle! Over the last 10 years, this area has grown into a well-known nature reserve and recreational area favoured by tourists and locals. Safety first: The Sand Motor floods twice a day during high tide, so keep an eye on the weather and sea, stick to the designated walking areas, and pay attention to the flags to see if swimming is currently allowed. Have fun and stay safe while exploring!
  • Sustainable beachy vibes: Besides admiring the success of this experimental ecosystem, there are lots of cool things to do at The Sand Engine. Walk along the shores of the beach, become an avid bird watcher, or dive into the ocean! Beach bar and restaurant Blow is a Zandmotor hotspot, known for great parties, delicious food, paddleboarding, beach volleyball, archery, and kitesurfing! If you’re looking for excitement, they’ve got you covered. Find out what’s happening at Blow, or book a kitesurfing lesson on their website
  • Sand Motor Run: Where’s our track stars at? The Sand Motor Run is a 5 or 10 km race across the beach, where you can truly appreciate the wind rushing through your hair. Kids can race too! There is also a 2 km for the small and active ones.
