Go back in time while watching a movie in this stunning movie theatre in the centre of Amsterdam.

In the centre of Amsterdam, near Rembrandtplein, you will find one of the most beautiful movie theatres you will ever lay eyes on.

Koninklijk Theater Tuschinksi’s (Royal Theatre Tuschinski) construction started in 1919, and was built in Art Deco, Amsterdamse School, Gothic and Jugendstil style. The lobby was designed to make the visitors feel as if they stepped into an illusion.

The theatre was built by Abraham Tuschinski: a tailor from Poland who was on his way to the United States, but ended up building a movie theatre enterprise instead. He had opened four theatres in Rotterdam as well, but sadly they were destroyed during the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. In the same year, the cinema was renamed to ‘Tivoli Theatre’ and began screening German made Nazi anti-Semitic films. Two years later, in 1942, Abraham Tuschinski got deported to Auschwitz, and never returned. The next year, in honour of Abraham Tuschinski, the theatre fortunately got its name back.

Today, Tuschinski Theatre is a cinema that is still in use by Pathé, a cinema chain that operates throughout the Netherlands and several other countries in Europe. Checkout their website to see what movies are playing when you’re in Amsterdam.
