The biggest train station in the Netherlands is located in the heart of the country.
With almost 210.000 passengers, more than 1000 departures a day and 16 platforms, Utrecht Central Station is the busiest train station of the country.
In 1843, the first train station in Utrecht was opened. It changed a couple of times, but in 1938 there was a huge fire that destroyed everything. Everything had to be rebuilt, and as a memorial of this, there was a statue of a phoenix on top of the building for a long time.
In the 1960’s, the city started building Hoog Catharijne, a mall that was connected to the train station until 2018. Between 2016 and 2018 they reconstructed the mall, and from this moment the station got its own entrance.
