Stroll through the botanical gardens and learn about the different flora and fauna.

At the Science Park (the main campus of the University of Utrecht) in Utrecht, you can find the University’s Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest ones in the world. These gardens have quite a history, as they have been existing for almost as long as the university itself: in 1636 the University of Utrecht was established, and three years later the first botanical garden was founded. It changed locations a couple of times, but in 1963, the botanical garden of Utrecht got located to the place where the gardens are currently at, at the land of Fort Hoofddijk, situated in Utrecht Science Park.

While walking around, you will discover all different sorts of plants from different parts of the world. If you are curious about the type of plant, every plant has a sign with its name on it!

Half of the visitors of the Botanical Gardens in Utrecht travel here for the butterfly house. Every week, the butterfly house gets 50 to 100 pupae from different countries around the world, such as Kenya, Costa Rica and the Philippines, so there are many different butterflies to admire here. Besides a butterfly house, there is a rock garden, a tropical greenhouse, an evolution garden, and much more to see. Visit one of these places, or just walk around, because with nine hectares, there is a lot to discover!
