**See what it is like on the inside of a typical Dutch windmill.

Located on a beautiful spot along the river the Spaarne is Windmill De Adriaan.

While the original windmill dates from 1779, and was burnt down in 1932, they rebuilt it in 2002. The mill is an important part of Harlem and has been a distinctive part of the skyline of for centuries. It's now an iconic sight whenever you're in Haarlem and a proud symbol for the city.

You can pay De Adriaan a visit on a guided tour that takes 45 minutes. It has a store, a floor where you can watch videos about windmills and a floor with a permanent exhibition, and one floor up you can go outside on the large wrap-around balcony and enjoy the beautiful view over the city and the river. On the 5th floor, you can see the blades turn.

Tips and Tricks

  • As stairs in windmills are very steep, children under 5 years old aren't allowed to go up, to keep them safe.

  • Walking: a 15-minute walk from Haarlem Central Station
