This flour windmill is one of the two windmills that is still left in the city of Utrecht.
From the many windmills that Utrecht counted back in the days, Windmill Rijn en Zon is the only one that is left, besides De Ster in the neighbourhood Lombok. The name means ‘Rhine and Sun’, and comes from the two men that got this windmill built, Govert van Rhijn en Bernardus Sonnenbergh,
The original windmill Rijn en Zon was built in 1745 at the Paardenveld, but when the council decided to create a vegetable auction at this place, the windmill was taken down. The windmill next to (De Meiboom) also got demolished, and a year later the parts of both windmills were used to create the windmill we know as Rijn en Zon today.
On the windmill, there is a text that translates to:
Anno 1913, The Rhine and Sun a pure source, With warm rays, To Utrecht’s pride and promised donation, To grind well, Founded by J. Korevaar, Structural engineer and plasterer
