The idea of creating a museum in Zgorzelec was born after the Second World War. However, after nearly sixty years, in 2001, the Lower Silesia scientific and museum communities proposed to establish such an institution. There was a need to create a scientific institution which, through its activities, would influence the development of knowledge, interest in the region and stimulate the awareness of the local society of the Minority. This was in line with the climate policy of the Europe of Regions, whose assumptions were adopted by the European Union.

The initiator of the whole project was the gang-building association "Euroopera" - known in the local community for the cultural development of the city and the region. The director of the Karkonoski museum, Stanisław Firszt, had a very serious influence on the direction and quality of the work.

From the beginning, the Lusatian Museum was supported by local authorities. In June 2003, the building was put on the premises of I. Daszyńskiego 15 on the premises of the facility. In a broad discussion, the preliminary conceptualization and areas of interest of the museum were established. It was functioning as a regional museum, aimed at studying and documenting the history, culture and daily life of the inhabitants of Upper Lusatia, especially Zgorzelec.

The ruined townhouse at Ignacy Daszyński Street required a thorough renovation. This task was included in the broad plan of revitalization of the Nysa suburbs. Thanks to the funds raised in the EU, the renovation was completed in 2007. The Lusatian Museum has started its work.
