The establishment of the museum in Gniezno is connected with archaeological research conducted since 1948, aimed at acquiring history and obtaining historical monuments documenting the origins of the Polish state and its first capital. They were founded in 1956 as the Gniezno Branch of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań. In 1966, as part of the celebration of the Millennium, the idea of ​​expanding the scope of the museum's activity and building a new seat was born. The museum became a stand-alone facility in 1973. At that time, the construction of a new building on Józef Kostrzewski Street began. The official opening of the permanent exhibition and naming of the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State took place in 1983.

The Museum of the Origin of the Polish State deals with the popularization of knowledge about the history and culture of the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the period from the beginning of the Polish state to the end of the Piast dynasty. It performs exhibitions, educational and research projects. It has archaeological, artistic, historical and archaeological collections. It is one of the most important points on the route of the Piast Route, the most frequented tourist route leading through Wielkopolska.

For several years the Museum of the Origin of Poland has been implementing the idea of ​​an open museum by constantly expanding its educational offer, in line with the promotional slogan "Creating History". Through various methods he communicates knowledge about the cultural heritage associated with the region, the history of the origins of the Polish state and the history of Gniezno.
