Initially, the museum was housed in a late Gothic tower and had the character of a regional institution. Around 1976 the renovation of the castle began, which ended in 1989. Thanks to the renovation carried out by the Provincial Conservator of Monuments, the foundation of three museums, the castle and the towers, was established.

The name of the institution, which since 1990 is the Museum - Castle of the Hillers in Szamotuły. The name refers to the inhabitants of Szamotuły, Poznań, Koźmin and Sieraków of the sixteenth-century, noble family of Górka, from which the Wielkopolska Voivodes, the church hierarchs and royal officials come from. In 1990 the museum was given the status of a state institution.

This was a very good time for the museum, because a regional museum managed to create a nationwide museum, a multi-award winner and an institution that publishes many catalogs. During this period, the Museum acquired nearly 6,000 new museum objects, of which over 1000 are historical objects related to the art of the Orthodox Church (including icons). These objects were acquired in the years 1993 - 1999 from Customs Offices. Since 1999 the museum is a self-government institution - district.
