In 1940s and 50s, led by Luiz Villas-Boas, a group of enthusiasts of jazz, the 'hot music', would get together to exchange records, share the news of the day and play. Eventually the group started organizing jazz sessions with local and international musicians, and in 1950 the club offiacially opened, with the name Hot Clube de Portugal. Since then, the club has organized festivals, historic concerts (like those of Sidney Bechet and Count Basie), recordings and regular jam sessions. Located in Praça da Alegria, Hot Clube is one of the oldest jazz clubs of Europe, and the oldest one still running, with world-wide recognition. It is a fantastic place to check out during the Lisbon evening.
