The Douro Museum, created by Law 125/97 of December 2, was designed as a museum polynuclear, designed to collect, preserve, research and disseminate the vast heritage museum and documentary dispersed throughout the region and should be a tool for development sociocultural of the Douro Region. A perspective of "community museology", the Douro Museum is assumed as a process whose development should involve active collaboration with local, regional and international institutions.
The administrative and financial management of the Douro Museum is the responsibility of the Douro Museum Foundation, created by Decree Law 70/2006, private, non-profit and public service. The Douro Museum Foundation aims at the installation, maintenance and management of the Douro Museum.
Law No. 24/2012 of 9 July, which approved the Framework Law on Foundations, clarifies its application to public foundations private law already established and recognized, imposing the suitability of the denomination and the Statute of Douro Museum Foundation to the requirements established in the aforementioned law. Thus, the present law is to meet the provisions of the Framework Law on Foundations, proceeding to adapt the Statute of the Douro Museum Foundation to the new regime of foundations.
