The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, or MNAA, first opened in 1884 in Palácio Alvor, where it still is located today. It holds the most relevant portuguese public colelction with paintings, sculptures, goldsmithery and decorative arts from Europe, Africa and the Orient, with over 40 000 items. The historic period of the works ranges from medieval ages to the XIX century, with great dedication on reflecting about the history of portuguese art, in particular the XV and XVI centuries. The museum has regular exhibitons, guided visits, forums, debates and summer workshops.
