After World War II, Porto Moniz was connected to the rest of the Island of Madeira when it's first road was built. It was dug into the hillside and was occasionally crossed by waterfalls that fell to the sea below. Due to the fall of rocks, for security reasons, the road was closed and tunnels were built to shorten the distance. The natural pools of Porto Moniz are emblematic of the town, which is a major tourist attraction. This beach complex consists of swimming pools formed from volcanic rocks, where the sea flows naturally, keeping the water fresh.
