Seixal is a municipality in the district of Setúbal, at the south bank of the Tejo. It divides in 6 parishes, and gets the name of the northeastern one, that has the ferryboat connection to Lisboa. Archaelogical remains show the presence of a town as far back as the roman age, and its development has always been intimately related to the river and its resources. Seixal was and is still a land of fishermen and traders, great farmlands and marshes, tidal mills and shipyards. With the proliferation of factories in the XIXth century, and the establishment of steel metallurgy and the 25 de Abril bridge in the XXth, Seixal evolved from a rural to an industrial district, leading to a demographic explosion, and strong social and cultural growth.
