The Lotru and Cindrel Mountains (a part of the Carpathian Mountains), in the southern area, cover more than 30% of the county's surface. Very attractive for the culture-addict visitors, this county has a more pronounced Saxon background and offers a lot of UNESCO World Heritage preserved sites, including several old towns and medieval Saxon fortified churches. Other key tourist attractions in Sibiu are: the city of Sibiu itself (with its medieval fortifications and its historic centre), the medieval city of Mediaș, the abbey of Cârța, the Făgăraș and Cindrel mountains, the spa towns of Ocna Sibiului, Bazna and Miercurea Sibiului… and the whole Mărginimea Sibiului rural area.
