Unmissable in the Ljubljana skyline, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas attracts tourists for its beautiful architecture, services, and impressive artwork. Located right in the heart of Ljubljana, the Cathedral is a site that every visitor in Ljubljana should take some time to visit.
This landmark is officially known as the Cathedral of St Nicholas, but throughout Ljubljana you’ll hear locals and tourists alike refer to it as Ljubljana Cathedral. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the city, known for its green dome and twin towers. You’ll come across the cathedral in the city centre, as it is located on the Cyril and Methodius Square.
The cathedral was formerly a gothic church that was replaced by the current Baroque-style building in 1706. While the exterior is impressive, the interior is even more! Check out the incredible frescoes that were painted in the early 19th century on the ceiling, along with the stunning main altar.
If you’re interested in attending a mass in the cathedral, they offer services daily at 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 16:00, and 18:30. Whether you’re catholic or not, it's an amazing experience to sit in one of the most beautiful cathedrals while one of their services takes place! If you’re not interested in a service, the cathedral is open daily so that you can admire its beauty without attending one.
