Explore the ruins of one of the largest fortifications in Slovenian history at Celje Castle, a historical castle with origins dating back to the 12th century.
Celje Castle is a beautiful fortress that is perched upon 3 hills, characterised by its beautiful, mediaeval stone architecture. The castle has a long history as it was the previous residence of the Counts of Celje, a powerful noble family that controlled a large area of president-day Slovenia.
Interestingly enough, the castle was built in stages throughout the next two centuries, and its architecture represents that. The architecture displays Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles all in one, reflective of the castle’s different evolution periods.
Visitors can explore the interior of the castle, which has been restored to be a museum that showcases the historical significance of the fortress. Throughout the year, there are a wide variety of concerts and medieval festivals that take place as well, making it a cool spot to check out some of Slovenia’s unique cultural events.
