Saint-Martin’s Day is an autumn celebration of the harvest - and in Slovenia’s tradition, the culture of wine since he is the patron saint of wine.
Ljubljana hosts a traditional Saint-Martin’s Day outdoor wine tasting event each November, which has gotten so popular over the year that now an additional summer event is added.
Known as the Ljubljana Wine Route, over 80 various wine producers from Slovenia, along with an entertainment programme, take over the public space throughout the old town. Cute little wine stalls are set up by the local wine producers, separated according to the different wine regions of Slovenia. You’ll see lots of people in traditional Slovenian outfits and playing folk music in the streets. It’s a huge party for Ljublana and the star of the show is the wine.
You’ll see old-school-style wooden barrels of wine for each stall, where you can get poured glasses of the much-loved beverage at an astoundingly low price (on most stalls, topping off your glass is only 1 euro!). If you’re feeling peckish from all the drinking, there are local farmer’s who pair their artisanal honey, charcuterie and cheeses to go along with your drink.
