To get up close and personal with the Shepherd huts, visit the two-room Preskar Hut!
The 60 traditional herdsmen huts around Velika Planina are unfortunately all replicas - or more accurately, rebuilt.
The originals were all lost during World War II when the Germans burned them to the ground. What was then left at the time is the Preskar Hut, which still stands as the original Shepherds hut of Velika Planina.
Inside, you can see what the small two-room holds - a museum, along with an example of the traditional “trnič”, and a cheese made by the Shepherds of Slovenia’s highlands.
The trnič has long been a symbol of love, as the Shepherds making these cheeses would gift these hard cheeses to their significant other as a promise of marriage. If the other person accepts, then it’s their way of saying yes! While the practice has now been adapted to modern-day rings, trnič is still cherished as yummy hard cheeses and a contemporary symbol of love.
