The site has four main biotopes: sandy beaches, endorheic salt marshes, dune systems and ponds, making up the most extensive marshland ecosystem in the province of Almería. The dune system is essential, as it supports the scrubland communities of Phoenician juniper and mastic trees. As we move inland, we find marshy plains with a clayey bottom and high concentrations of chlorides, populated with halophilic vegetation depending on the degree of salinity: reeds, rushes, salicornia... © iStock / f-1977
