It is one of the few preserved medieval castles in the region. Together with the walls, of which few remains remain, it was a key point for the defence of the town. It must have been built as a defensive element in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. In 1853, the circular ashlar lighthouse was built in the southeast tower, one of the oldest in the region. © iStock / saiko3p
