Hang out in the hanging gardens in spring. Mother Nature is all over this city and hugging its medieval walls.

Travel to the very top of Thuin to see a garden on the walls. The gardens are a nature gem of the Biesmelle valley, right on the southern slope. Stroll the quaint streets to discover historic, medieval pieces of the city. Open up the louvre doors you see along the way to uncover 200+ terraced gardens. But most of what you’ll see is plants blending into the city on walls, floors and doors.

Walk options: pick from a 4km trek or two 2km options. All of the walks start from the belfry. You’ll need about 1 hour - 1 ½ hours for the walk. We recommend getting a leaflet for a map of the walks from Thuin Tourist Office (Place Albert 1er 2).

Don’t miss the 11 panels on the history of Thuin along the 4km walk.

The Hanging Gardens of Thuin is one of the Exceptional Heritage sites of Wallonia. A must see for nature lovers exploring this region!

Why are the gardens hanging about?

Basically, back in the medieval times when Thuin’s walls were being built, they decided to add some terraces. The rich and the monks made an unexpected partnership to turn those terraces into gardens and veggies patches. Plus, in a happy accident, the heat from the sandstone walls made the terraces perfect places for vineyards. The sweet wine Le Close des Zouaves is made here.
