The Asclepieion of Kos is the most important archaeological site on the Greek island of Kos. The ancient sanatorium is located nearly 4 km southwest, outside the current island capital, on a cypress-wooded hill nearly 100 m above sea level. It was discovered and excavated in 1902 by the German archaeologist Rudolf Herzog on the instructions of the Kos historian Iakovos Zaraftis. The excavations continued until 1904. © iStock/KarelGallas
