This Amsterdam district borders the popular Vondelpark and has plenty of stuff to do to stay busy. Oud-West has a super laid back vibe, with a good balance between young professional expats and families. You’ll find yourself wandering around the area with ease, and soon feel at home as if you’re one of the locals. Whether you’re trying all the food in De Hallen, drinking your way through the infamous LGBTQ+ street, or relaxing in the park, you’re guaranteed a good time here.
Foodies unite! Amsterdam West has one of the best food halls in the entire city - De Hallen. You no longer have to choose between restaurants for your next meal. Try it all! The massive building has 19 indoor food stalls ranging from all genres, and they’re all equally delicious. Plus, there’s more to De Hallen than just food. They’ve got ongoing events and workshops, plus the intimate movie theatre Film Hallen. Kinda makes for the perfect date night, right?
One street that really stands out in the West neighbourhood is the lively Reguliersdwarsstraat. This is known as Amsterdam’s popular LGBTQ+ street - if you couldn’t already tell from all the rainbow flags and vibrant vibes. That means the bars and clubs here are nothing but fun, 24/7! Two of our favourites are Bar Blend and SOHO Club where you’ll always find a great party.
The Oud-West district is known for hosting the beloved 10 Kate Market. It’s one of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets with local produce, and is often a popular spot for locals to stock up on groceries and other goodies. For any of our book lovers, we’ve got two great options for you. Mendo is a really cute independent publishing house and bookstore where you can get lost in all the variety. If you manage to visit on a Friday, stop by the Spui Book Market - it’s in the outdoor square with secondhand books of all genres.
If it’s green you’re looking for, Amsterdam Oud-West is prepared to deliver. On one side you have the popular Vondelpark, where you can easily spend a few hours wandering through the picturesque outdoor area. Or hit up Westerpark - where it blends together lovely green spaces, iconic architecture, and a fun nightlife scene. Either park you choose will be the perfect, serene getaway from the busy neighbourhood streets.
If you want fun, we’ve found it. Gather up your most talented friends and head to the vibrant Reguliersdwarsstraat. After starting with a few drinks, the place to go is the Duuk of Tokyo. The fun-filled karaoke bar will transport you to the bright and lively streets of Tokyo, where you can go solo or duet the night away!
So you’ve decided you want to stick around a bit longer. We don’t blame you. Looking for an extra special accommodation? Why not try out the Hotel, Not Hotel? You read that correctly. Part museum, part hotel, and a whole lot of fun. Each room is unique and has its own art, creator, story, and identity. From staying in a vintage VW van to a brightly coloured wooden cottage, we think this may be one of the most unique places to stay in all of Amsterdam. Plus, they’ve got Kevin Bacon. No, not the actor. It’s their bar and restaurant filled with art and serving up delicious brunch, thai-themed dinner, and the best boozy drinks around.
If you don’t feel quite finished with Amsterdam yet, have no fear! We’ve got plenty of neighbourhood guides to make the most out of your time in the Dutch capital city.
