Rumors have it that Stockholm is a pricy city not always suitable for budget travellers. And yes, Stockholm can be expensive. But there are some tricks for budget travellers: here is a short backpacker’s guide to Stockholm.

Accommodation

Like most big cities, Stockholm’s central parts are very expensive to live in. This is true not only for locals but also for travellers visiting St[ockholm](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/what-to-see-and-do-in-stockholm-ask3). But luckily, Stockholm has plenty of hostels and cheap hotels to choose from. Hostels, where visitors share a dorm-room with others, are a great budget option. Why not stay at the trendy City Backpackers Hostel, situated close to the Central Station? If not, then simply take the chance to spend your night at the unique hostel STF af Chapman, which is a sailing boat turned into a hostel.

Last but not least - have a look at Airbnb! If you do not mind a bit of travelling, there is always good and less pricy accommodation a bit outside the city. These are often less expensive than the hotels in the center.

What to do & what to see

For the most backpacker-friendly visit to Stockholm, make sure to experience the city during summer. During the summer months, the city becomes a haven of free outdoor activities for its trendy, hipster, or cultural visitors and locals. Visit one of the many outdoor markets or use your Su[bway](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/getting-around-stockholm-public-transport-tips-c1ku) card to catch a ferry to one of the closest islands in the St[ockholm Archipelago.](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/discover-the-stockholm-archipelago-r449)

Most locals in Stockholm spend their summer evenings on the rocky hills surrounding the ocean, barbecuing, drinking beer, and swimming. And when the sun goes down, there are plenty of nice bars with outdoor serving areas selling beer that is expensive, but not so pricy that it will ruin you.

Stockholm is also a great city to walk around in. Experience the city on foot: from the medieval buildings in the Old City **to the modern creations and the fancy boulevard ocean road leading to the tranquil and scenic island Djurgården. There are also several walking tour providers **offering special tours, some of them for free or at a low cost.

Where & what to eat

Visiting a restaurant can be rather expensive - even if you are not looking to eat at the fine-dining ones. But even in Stockholm, there are several budget options. There are, for instance, several good burger bars, world-food, and ve[getarian restaurants](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/where-to-eat-vegan-food-in-stockholm-snj1) serving food at a reasonable price. And when the weather allows, get yourself a tasty salad from one of the many salad bars that most of the supermarkets offer. These are not only fresh but have a great variety suitable for vegans, meat-eaters, and cheese lovers.

Backpacking in Stockholm does not have to be hard - as long as you know where to stay, what to see and where to eat.
