A trip into mythology; Olympus

While living in Greece, even though I was familiar with all the mythological stories (indeed as I said, I grew up learning about Zeus and Hercules and a lot of other prominent mythological characters), I’ve never realised that the greek mythology is a such a huge topic of interest for people outside Greece. Questions and stories I’ve heard from friends and such facts inspired me to write this series of pages during which I’ll present to you some of the most mythological places and the stories hidden behind them!

After having presented the mythological facts behind Athens’ ,Peloponnese, Crete and their surroundings, it’s time to move towards the main and probably the most influential mythological & legendary temple of ancient Greece, the Mount Olympus.

Mythology, ancient greeks & Olympus.

When you’re thinking about the most iconic mountains of the world, I’m pretty sure that the Mt Olympus, located in Greece, has a spot in your list! Not only is it a geographically impressive peak, rising straight from the Aegean Sea to a height of 2,917 m, but it’s also one of great mythological importance.

Also known as the home of the 12 Olympian Gods, the Mount Olympus was described as a beautiful shelter, heavenly abode, untouched by cold, wind, rains or snow. Beautiful golden palaces of the gods, built by Hephaestus, were luxurious and could be found on the top of the mountain. The Ancient Greeks believed that there were many gods and goddesses who lived on the top of the mountain, which was covered with snow and often shrouded in clouds. Its sides were very steep, and covered with thick forests of oak and beech trees.

The entrance to Mount Olympus, the home of the gods, was a great gate of clouds, kept by the Seasons. They would open the gates to permit the passage of the deities to earth, and receive them on their return. The Greeks believed that the Olympians were a family, and just like mortal families there jealousies, quarrels and arguments.

The home of the gods was described by ancient Greek authors such as Homer who wrote:

Nowadays, the Mount of Olympus and its surroundings can be considered as an ideal excursion for the lovers of alternative activities, ranging from trekking to paragliding, canyoning, rafting, climbing, mountain-biking and jeep safari. If you ever visit Greece, then do not miss the chance to visit probably the most mythological spot of all times!
