Novi Sad, a current candidate for the European Capital of Culture, is a vibrant, modern city, and a real treat for every tourist. The spirit and the energy of Novi Sad just make it so easy to fall in love with it, while discovering its unique art hubs, concert venues, and theatres. Naturally, all that walking may make you thirsty and a bit tired, so it’s always a good idea to have a certain locally popular place in mind when that happens. Here is a suggestion of three such places, close to the city center, where you can assimilate with the locals, recharge, and enjoy in the ingenious coffee experience in Novi Sad.
These three cafes may not be in the popular tourist guides, but they are a great manifest of Novi Sad’s subculture, the local places where many different sides of the city inoculate together, creating a unique and pleasant atmosphere.
This cute cafe and gallery is hidden in a hard-to-spot passage in one of the most prominent streets of Novi Sad - Zeleznicka. It’s especially popular with the locals during the summer, when the guests mostly relax in the garden, with wicker chairs, rustic tables, and cold drinks. The inside of the cafe is decorated with the vintage furnishing, covered in warm colors, and different art exhibition hanging on the walls each time. Besides this cozy place being spiced up with just the right dose of the local art scene and support for the independent artists, there is one more thing that people just love about Izba cafe and gallery. Its cute cat that found itself at home within the cafe. If it is in a good mood, it may even let you pet it.
Another terrific place, a bit out of the regular tourist’s way, but totally worth the extended 10-minutes walk from the city center. It’s not a place to party all night, or where you meet a crowd of college students. It’s a place that will power your creativity, where you will enjoy your coffee, and just breathe in the permanent smell of the rock’n’roll in the air. Visually, Graffiti has created its own unique ambiance, a task that so many newly opened cafes, bars, and restaurants continuously failed to do. It has a personality, and if it were a person, it would be a guitarist and failed artist from the 1980s, who nowadays has a successful small business, but still knows all the good, bad, and unbelievable stories of the city.
Foxtrot offers a bit more sophisticated coffee experience, or an afternoon glass of wine if that’s more of your thing. It takes pride in its long jazz history, as it has become a place of reference for the good saxophone sounds and chilled afternoons/evenings with friends. During the summer, most people like to chill in the garden, in one of the busiest streets, not far from the city center, but casually hidden between the decorative bushes. If it weren’t for an occasional car honking, you would feel outplaced from the hustle and bustle that every big city has. The interior is arranged in a jazzy way as well, as you can find there the trumpets, saxophone, and even a piano!
While there are so many different places that answer to many different tastes, these three cafe-bars have become more of the local institutions. Maybe they appear as if they don’t follow the latest trends, but they’ve been successfully preserving the spirit of Novi Sad for years, and just offer a great way to get a taste of local, ingenious coffee experience in Novi Sad.
