Why to buy a carpet?

Many people travel to Armenia just to buy Armenian carpets or rugs. You can find traditional carpets abroad as well, but the selection in Armenia is more vast. Carpets are the integral part of Armenian culture. Each of them has a history and every symbol, ornament, and even its origin have a meaning behind them. So, while buying one, ask about its history and detailed explanation of each symbol, as it will not only decorate the floor, but will also be present at your house as a piece of art with its ideology and history.

The history of Armenian carpets:

Carpet/rug weaving is both a craft and an art. Armenian carpet weaving dates back to the 5th century BC. The oldest carpet “Pazyryk” is saved at the Hermitage museum in Russia, and according to different international experts, it was made by Armenians (Urartians). It has already been proven that the carpet was dyed by “vordan karmir” pigment and has ornaments typically seen in the Urartian style. Before and now, Armenian traditional carpets are made from high quality wool, and are dyed by natural colors (flowers and durable "vordan karmir" pigment). Even if there is something similar that unites all Armenian carpets, each region and province had and has its unique style, ornaments, and design. You cannot find two handcrafted rugs that are exactly the same. Even if they look similar, each carpet is unique. You can learn more about this at the History Museum of Armenia.

There is a rule in Armenia to weave carpets with love and always in a good mood. They say if you make carpet in a bad mood the colors fade away.
