Do you remember a scene when James Bond enters into a nuclear bunker in “The World is Not Enough” movie? Have you ever wondered if nuclear bunkers really exist in reality? And how about Cold War shelters against atomic attacks? Wouldn’t be so cool to explore an underground refuge like that, and especially in a country that had a long communist regime? If you ask yourself where should you go, here is the answer. All you need to do is to come to the town called Konjic (Bosnia & Herzegovina) in order to visit Tito’s bunker, known as a place where the Balkan’s Top Secret got revealed.

Atomic War Command

Can you imagine an underground shelter spread on 6.500 m2, consisting of more than 100 rooms? A sort of U-shape labyrinth that has everything for the living and working – bedrooms, a hospital, a kitchen, offices, conference rooms, air-conditioning, oil tanks … This impressive bunker called Atomic War Command (AWC) was a vision of Josip Broz Tito, a communist president of the former Yugoslavia (1953-1980). It was built as a shelter for him and his 350 closest political comrades, in case of a nuclear war. The construction of Tito’s bunker was done in complete secrecy during 26 years (from 1953 to 1979) and it cost unbelievable 4.6 billion U.S. dollars.

Situated hundreds of meters below the mountain Zlatar, not far from the town of Konjic, Tito’s bunker could resist a nuclear attack of 25 kilotons, with the deepest point on 280 m under the ground. In case of a catastrophe, people could stay inside for at least six months without going outside, as they had all that is essential to survive. Tito was very obsessed by possible nuclear war, so this place reflects those fears. Actually, even today everything is still functional in this bunker, including 21 maintenance systems. Hypothetically, it could be used for the same purpose, but obviously, this is not the case.
