In Alsace, the way of life and heritage preserve countless traces of a not so distant past when it belonged, successively, to France, to Germany and then again to France. It is a very distinctive region, much more oriented towards central Europe than the rest of the country. Devotees of gastronomy know it for its famous 'Wine Route' (of mostly white wines) and come to taste the famous Rieslings and Gewürztraminers, but it is also renowned for its sauerkraut, sausages and other dishes that are reminiscent of neighbouring Germany.
