Sweeter than your first love

This promise, that the offered strawberries are sweeter than the first love, I got during my morning walk around the market tables stuffed with fresh fruits and vegetables on Skadarlija Pijaca in Belgrade. Once I got a useful tip from one grandfather: If you want to have a clear picture about one city, visit the city open market and the city cemeteries. In that way, you can see the cultural approach of the inhabitants to the life (open markets) and to the death (cemeteries). I will focus on the life part.

In Belgrade, the most poetic city on Balkans, there are several open markets that you can visit and face the sweet truth about Serbia- Its gifted with fertile soil. For many Belgrade inhabitants going to the open market early in the morning is a ritual, to always have fresh groceries at home. If you can take your eyes off the colorful variety of juiciness that is offered to you, you can see typical old Belgrade ladies, winding by to take some nuts and berries, saying hi to the sellers, before going to walk their dogs.

Like in every big city, there are several fixed open markets, that are open every day, serving a different part of the city, and also there are periodical open markets. The periodical ones are mostly related to the holidays and are placed centrally. One of this is open market Trg Otvorenog Srca, that means square for open-hearted, and It is two months market on the main square in Belgrade, where you can taste a delicius street food, buy handcrafts and part of the profit goes to humanitarian organizations.

The trend that lasts for two years now is that the open markets, the ones that regularly operates during the day with food supplies, during nights are open in particular days for young designers, and with DJs and local beer, you can enjoy this event called Belgrade Night Market. This is beautiful, unusual event that shows how important one open market is for the city. We can agree that Belgrade for sure knows how to celebrate life!
