One of the great things about Italy is that its long thin shape means that when you get fed up with sightseeing you are often a relatively short distance from a beach. In many of the more popular areas, large sections of beach are reserved as paid beaches. Italy is full of differents cultures you can see: Etruscan Italy, The Greek influence, Roman ruins, Christian Italy, The Byzantine cities and The Renaissance.

It is a paradise for history buffs, rich in Greek temples and Roman sites dating back to Antiquity, as well as in Byzantine style buildings. The names of Syracuse and Taormina alone awaken the desire to visit the island. Its gastronomy gives pride of place to citrus fruits, fish and oriental flavours. Situated at a stone's throw from the African continent, it enjoys sunshine almost year-round, a warm climate and a volcanic terrain (with Mount Etna as the largest active volcano in Europe) that is well suited to agriculture.

Known for its magical temples and stunning towns and villages, Sicily offers beautiful spots immerse in nature that will make you want to move there! The sea is green and blue, the water crystalline, the mountains offer the typical Mediterranean vegetation and the Etna is just magical.... and I am not even talking about the many small islands around it!

Here is a collection of my favorite natural reserves spread through Sicily. These are the ones I never miss when I am there and even if I do not have the time... well I just make time for them as they are stunning! 

Whether you want to be alone in nature with just the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore or you like a less remote beach with facilities and people, these spots will not disappoint you. The water is so clear and the landscapes so nice that it will be difficult to leave when it is time to go home!

The "Stair of the Turks" is a rocky cliff on the coast of Realmonte, near Porto Empedocle. It has become a tourist attraction due to its unusual white color, as well as by its mention in Andrea Camilleri's series of detective stories about Commissario Montalbano. The Scala is formed by marl, a sedimentary rock with a characteristic white color. It lies between two sandy beaches, and is accessed through a limestone rock formation in the shape of a staircase, hence the name. The latter part of the name derives from the frequent raids carried on by Moors.

Castellammare del Golfo

Riserva naturale dello zingaro is the first natural reserve that has been set up in Sicily in May 1981. It stretches along about 7 kilometers of unspoilt coastline of the Gulf of Castellammare and its mountain chain which is the setting of little bays and steep cliffs. The Zingaro Reserve has a large variety and abundance of rare and endemic plants it also has a rich fauna. The existence of highly varied ecological niches gives a great diversity which is not easily found in others parts of the island.

Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro

Sicily offers many mountains too and the stunning Mediterranean landscapes and vegetation will take your breath away! Make sure to wear a hat and sun block as the sun is very strong (especially in summer) and to take with you plenty of fluids (as in some reserves, there is no restoration point). And Sicily also offers a pretty unique place where you will feel like you are on the moon: the Etna. Have you never been on a Volcano? Well, time to do so (and remember to pack warm clothes as it is very cold up there!).

Mount Etna is an iconic site encompassing 19,237 uninhabited hectares on the highest part of Mount Etna, on the eastern coast of Sicily. Mount Etna is the highest Mediterranean island mountain and the most active stratovolcano in the world. The eruptive history of the volcano can be traced back 500,000 years and at least 2,700 years of this activity has been documented. The almost continuous eruptive activity of Mount Etna continues to influence volcanology, geophysics and other Earth science disciplines. The volcano also supports important terrestrial ecosystems including endemic flora and fauna and its activity makes it a natural laboratory for the study of ecological and biological processes. The diverse and accessible range of volcanic features such as summit craters, cinder cones, lava flows and the Valle de Bove depression have made the site a prime destination for research and education.

Especially in the Sicily's center (mostly known for its ceramic caves and laboratories), you will be able to find nice and refreshing rivers. They are all in the mountains, so it might take a while for you to hike there, but it will not disappoint you!
