Basically, half of Slovakia consists of mountains, so if you go anywhere except for the south ( that is the wine region!), you might find a ski resort with several ski slopes. Of course, they are not the same quality and size, so if you are an advanced skier, you better do the research and do not leave anything to chance. Here are the best skiing spots for both advanced skiers and beginners.
Jásna ski resort is located in the region of Low Tatras, on the Chopok mountain, and it is the largest ski resort in Slovakia. Ski slopes are together 49 kilometers long, and here you can find 28 cable cars. Jasná is also a great option for free riders. If you're into freeride skiing, you can check this guided ski trip around Chopok and Deres peaks, including Dresden boiler and Luke Valley areas. If you want to get the best of Jasná, one day is definitely not enough. The more you can spend, the better. Since it is the biggest ski resort, you can find here everything: ski schools, shops and ski rentals, amazing apres-ski bars, wellness and spa, and numerous hotels and restaurants offering the best services. Also if you are looking for a destination with a lively nightlife, this is the right choice.
Tatranská Lomnica is a village located in the High Tatras mountain range, and it offers access to the uppermost and steepest ski slopes in Slovakia. The highest ski slope is 2190 meters above sea level, undoubtedly offering the best views of mountains and the valley. Higher trails are for advanced skiers only, but a bit lower, you can find over six kilometers of easier trails suitable for beginners, children, and families. The lowest cable car that will access you to different ski routes is called Štart. This ski resort, together with Jasná, is the most popular one. There are numerous accommodation options for different price ranges also in neighboring villages.
Štrbské Pleso is definitely the most “posh” ski resort. It is probably due to the picturesque lake area surrounded by the most expensive hotels. It is worth visiting even without spending the night because the lake view is one of the most iconic sights in the High Tatras. Anyway, the slopes are great, and if you are a beginner or intermediate skier, you will love it. And if your favorite winter sport is apres-ski, you will like it even more. No, but really, the good thing about this resort is that even if you do not want to ski, there are plenty of options, such as cross country or sledding. The big advantage of Štrbské Pleso is that it is easily accessible with public transport from Poprad or other surrounding towns.
Park Snow Donovaly, located in Low Tatras, near Banská Bystrica, turns into a winter wonderland. It is a great option when you want to spend your winter holiday with kids since it has the second-largest skiing facility dedicated exclusively to children in Europe. There are 11 kilometers long slopes of different difficulty levels, also cross country, and freeride trails. The ice rink is also available on the site, so there are plenty of activities you can do except skiing. Of course, ski and snowboard school with English speaking instructors, ski rental and ski shop is a must. And at the end of the day, you can relax with a craft beer brewed onsite at Donovalský pivovar.
Bachledka ski resort is an excellent option if you want to have a quality time, but avoid overcrowded and overpriced places at the High Tatras. Prices in Bachledka are really reasonable; a one-day ski pass costs around 20 euros, which is half the price of other ski resorts in the area. Of course, Bachledka is smaller in size than other resorts, but you can still spend some quality time here. You can find here seven cable cars and ski slopes that are suitable more for beginners than advanced skiers. It is a great place where you can learn how to ski or snowboard without being afraid that someone might crash with you. Part of the resort is also a beautiful walking trail built up in the tree crowns.
Skiing conditions in Slovakia are amazing, and the country can be an ideal destination for your winter holiday. Jasná, Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, Park Snow Donovaly and Bachledka are the five best skiing spots in Slovakia and definitely have a lot to offer. You will not be disappointed when you choose one of the locals' favorite ski resorts.
