Cavtat, an underestimated green neighbor of Dubrovnik

If you take a tour south from Dubrovnik, in 20 km you will find yourself in a very charming little town called Cavtat. You will recognize it by the fact that the green color is everywhere. The whole town is located on a small peninsula called Rat. Whoever comes to Cavtat, will be back one day, as it is an underestimated green neighbor of Dubrovnik. Everywhere you turn, you will see green terraces, small parks, grass, bushes, green pine and cypress trees. Because of the green land, the sea has a unique green turquoise color along the coast and a dark blue a little bit further from the coastline. It is just stunning. 

Besides the charming nature, Cavtat has an amazing and long history. The town survived several destructions. It hides a historical sites that are a few thousand years old. If you look carefully, you can see the ruins of the old walls, even from the Greek and Ilirian times. The first known name of the city was Epidaurum, and it was totally destroyed in the 7th century. For a few centuries, it remained forgotten until the Republic decided to rebuild it in the 15th century. 

House of Vlaho Bukovac

Even if you are not familiar with the great works of painter Vlaho Bukovac, you should take the time to visit his house. This museum is a living example of his life and art progress. Račić family's mausoleum

In the Cemetery of St Rocco, you can see a magnificent mausoleum of the shipbuilding family Račić, made by a famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It was built in 1921, as per the testament's will of Marija Račić. The whole mausoleum was built from white stone brought from Brač Island. The entering door is made out of bronze. This is one of the oldest cemeteries to visit around, so don’t miss it.

Rector’s palace

Rector’s palace is an old villa, constructed during the Renaissance period. Today, it represents an art gallery with more than 35.000 artifacts, including costumes, all sorts of weapons, folklore objects, graphics, and paints. Inside the palace, you can see a very old and rich library with more than 20.000 books. 

Go for a walk

Walking along the coast could be a real challenge as Cavtat has one of the longest promenades, almost 7 km long. Take your camera and a bottle of water, and just go to explore the surroundings of Cavtat. You will be amazed by the landscapes. Also, the beaches here are among the most beautiful ones on the whole Adriatic coast. Find that special one for yourself and fall in love.
