Conil de la Frontera: great beach, party and food!

Conil de la Frontera is located in the south of Spain, near the strait of Gibraltar and Bolonia Beach, at the border with Morocco. Its sandy beaches, white houses, delicious seafood and great ambiance at night make it an ideal place for all kinds of tourists. So keep this in mind… Conil de la Frontera: great beach, party and food!

A bit of history…

First, let’s get a glance at the history of this city. The Phoenicians, all the way from Palestine, already settled here some 3,000 years ago. The reason? The strait of Gibraltar is a must-passing spot for tuna fish. Every year, thousands of them swim through this narrow length of sea between Spain and Morocco. Therefore, they installed themselves here and set up a system of fishing nets that made this area very rich for centuries, through the Roman Empire, up until the Moorish conquest. 

Then began another important chapter. All of Spain belonged to the Christians, except for the Kingdom of Grenade, and Conil was at the very border. That explains its current name (de la Frontera, from the border). This also explains the three towers you can find in Conil de la Frontera (Guzmán, in the ancient castle, del Puerco and Castilnovo), built to watch over the enemy. 

In the 1960s, Conil de la Frontera started to receive its first tourists. Word spread out that its beaches were amazing, and now it is one of the most attractive destinations of the Costa de la Luz!

What to visit: beaches & patrimony

The beaches of Conil de la Frontera are ideal for lying down and enjoying the sun. The sea is calm, the water has an amazing temperature, and the sand goes on for hundreds of meters. If you like smaller beaches, some are northwest of Conil de la Frontera. For example, if you visit Castilnovo and del Puerco Beach, look at their ancient vigilance towers!

Inside Conil de la Frontera, the best thing, without a doubt, is to walk its beautiful white streets and dive into the great ambiance of this town. If you like to party, many pubs are in the city centre. If you do not, I do not advise you to rent anything near this area.

You could also visit the Torre de Guzmán and the local churches. Being a fishing town, many religious traditions are linked to the sea. For instance, every July 16th, Our Lady of Carmen is taken out to the sea on a boat, escorted by all the local boats. It is a very picturesque scene, but not the only one. Another procession takes place on the first days of November to remember the people lost in the sea, this one inside Conil de la Frontera. 

And last but not least… food!

If you ever go to Conil de la Frontera, you must order seafood. It is fresh and cooked in many, many, many delicious ways! For example, you should try the honorary fish of this town, the tuna, cooked in onion. The very traditional mojama is another must (cured and salted tuna). Any fish and cold beer will taste like heaven in this beautiful town. There are many bars and restaurants, very typical and pretty. The hardest thing will be to choose one of them!
